You have been invited to interview because the company feel you have relevant skills and experience for the position and want to find out more about you. In order to make the interview a success there is a certain amount of preparation that needs to be done.

Find Out About The Company
If you show that you are informed about the company it will make you appear to be serious about the position at interview. To gain information request that the company send you some literature about themselves e.g. brochure and/or annual report and visit their website if they have one. You will want to know about the company's product, the size of the company, if they have other sites/offices and their reputation.

Check Your Application
Check the CV and covering letter that you sent for the position and re-read the advertisement. By remembering exactly what the company is looking for and knowing exactly what you sent it will stop you from seeming vague at the interview.

Location
To avoid any panic on the day of the interview, check that you know exactly where the company is based and plan how to get there. Aim to arrive approximately 10 minutes prior to the interview.

Dress Code
Select clothing that is in keeping with the job sector, if you are unsure choose smart rather than casual.

What To Take With You
You should take a copy of your CV, any relevant certificates and references.

First Impression
On the day, walk into the room with confidence and introduce yourself. Practice a good handshake, not too firm and not too weak. You should look well groomed with tidy hair, shoes and clothing. The interviewer will be judging your integrity and professionalism from the moment you meet.

Asking Questions
The interviewer will tell you a great deal about the company and the job but it is up to you to get all the information you need. The interviewer will appreciate being asked as it shows that you have thought about the job and that you know what you want. You will need to know the answers to the following:

  1. What will be your regular duties?
  2. Are there any occasional duties?
  3. Are there other people doing a similar job?
  4. What hours will you be working?
  5. What sort of equipment will you be using?
  6. Is there any training?
  7. Is there an appraisal system?
  8. What are the promotional prospects?
  9. What is the holiday entitlement?
  10. Are there any other benefits?
  11. When will you hear if you have been successful?

When you have heard all about the job, if it appeals to you, say so and why. Let the interviewer see that you are enthusiastic about the position.

Summary
Be positive, answer the questions honestly and relate the answers to the position that you are applying for. Do not criticise your previous employers and do not interrupt the interviewer. By planning for the interview it will help you to remain calm and will give you a better chance of success.

Good Luck!
